I saw this film in the theater when it was originally released in 1983 and it has been one of my favorites ever since. What is unbelievable is that it bombed at the box office and was panned by the critics. This movie is hilarious, and has to be seen in the Monty Python frame of mind. Chapman is priceless, Madeline Kahn is unforgettable, John Cleese is knowing, Cheech and Chong are hilarious, and Marty Feldman is a amusing genius. I have friends over every year to sight this film and it’s become a “Rocky Apprehension Represent prove” type of event complete with costumes, antics, quote contests, and other silliness. It is a shame this isn’t available on DVD. Most of the VHS versions were awful quality, and my copy is certainly on its last legs. If you indulge in Monty Python, this definitely belongs in your collection while it’s aloof somewhat available.

This movie is far under-rated in the realm of the Python movies. Seems to me it didn’t procure enough PR or something because as a comedy film alone it is hilarious. It stars Graham Chapman (Yellowbead a gross, nefarious, out of touch, murderous pirate that kills anyone that gets in the scheme of his killing anyone), John Cleese (Blind Pew who has the most acute hearing in the world), Eric Slothful, Marty Feldman, Cheech and Chong (Spanish morons), Madeline Kahn (the unfaithful Mrs. Yellowbeard), Peter Boyle (Yellowbeard’s adversary and conventional ship-mate, Moon), and James Mason (a cruely laughable, overly sadastic, crude Mutiny on the Bounty captain type) . It is place in the year 1707 and starts out with Yellowbeard nearing his release after 15 years in an English prison, and of course everyone wants to know where Yellowbeard hid his pirate admire. Yellowbeard escapes the prison after his sentence is unfairly increased (to accept him enraged enough to dash on purpose) honest before his parole and the rest movie is based on his attempt to avoid beng imprisoned again while being chased by the limp-wristed British authorities and going on a droll non-sensical killing, raping (because he likes rape) and pilliging rampage tryng to recover the cherish he hid so long ago. Of course the British authorities and Moon are after the care for too This is a classic and should have been released on DVD a long time ago. This is Python stuff at it’s best with the nastiest Python humor anywhere! Someone please recall up on it and obtain a DVD of it soon as I have only stale rental resale VHS version (accch!) copy of it and would admire to glimpse it as it was meant to be seen- clearly and with grand THX sound.

Some reviewers and fans of the Bond films have complained that this film is a lesser anxiety in the series and pales in comparison to “Casino Royale”. They have missed something valuable in their assessment of the film. When Dominic Green says to Bond that he and Camille Montez have something in current, that they are both “Damaged goods” he has clearly establish before the audience the crux of the film that is “Quantum of Solace”.

The film picks up only minutes after the demolish of “Casino Royale” and we are presented with a very damaged and changed James Bond. As revealed in the first film by Vesper Lynd’s assessment of him upon their first meeting on the philosophize, James Bond is a man who came up from humble beginnings and was given a privileged education but never allowed to forget his gross origins. This has made him a very guarded loner with a chip on his shoulder, a perfect candidate for recruitment by MI6. In his words to her later on in the film, Vesper has “stripped me of my armor.” But by the kill of that film he is a man scarred by the death of his care for, the armor is benefit on never to be penetrated again. He is now becoming the Bond of yarn and a man crooked on revenge.

So in “Quantum” there is no reason for the traditional fashioned quips or noteworthy humor in this man. Yet if you pay attention the character of James Bond as played by the incomparable Daniel Craig he lets us discover that there are cracks in the armor. Something of a human heart calm exists in him. This is played out in the scene after the plane atomize where Camille asks him about his past. Craig shows it in his eyes in the most valid example of his layered and subtle acting style. Craig builds and molds a deeper, darker more complex Bond than we have ever seen before, a character more lawful to the books than in previous incarnations of Bond.

The action in the film is superlative and stylish. The opening car shuffle is indeed a nail biter only surpassed by the Sienna lope moments later. This too is then topped by the DC10 aerial battle towards the slay of the film. The stunts are breathtaking and propel the film at top notch race. But perhaps the most pleasing and novel sequence is the gun fight in the restaurant at the Opera house. This is played without sound carry out as the catch of “Tosca” commands the ear and heightens the emotion of the scene. This is inspired and colorful film making taking in sage all aspects of editing, cinematography, gather, and acting. And since I mentioned music I cannot leave out the fantastic savory gather by David Arnold who has infused his Bond scores with the powerful need taste of John Barry. He captures the sparkling Barry sound and builds brilliantly upon it.

All the principle players give superlative performances. Judi Dench insist attention as she always has as “M”. Giancarlo Giannini redeems himself and is truly touching as Mathis. Mathieu Amalic is appropriately slithery and devious as the villain Green. As Agent Fields, Miss Gemma Arterton brings a light and fun light to the film. Finally in the role of Camille Olga Kurylenko holds her occupy opposite Daniel Craig. This is no mean feat and she is fantastic, athletic and touching in the film.

In the ruin Bond does score a quantum of solace and ends the film in a telling scheme. A diminutive gesture that lets us know he is now keen on but not without a tinge of sadness. This elegant unlit ending is a refreshing and captivating plot to kill a Bond film.

“Quantum of Solace” is a like a flash paced film that demands attention to the petite details and respect for superlative performances by all interested from the director Marc Forster to the entire cast and crew.

“Quantum of Solace,” the latest James Bond film and the second featuring Daniel Craig has its flaws, but is smooth a gorgeous spectacular film. The series is in tubby retooling mode, hardly recognizable when compared to the films of Sean Connery and Roger Moore. While closer to the darker sides of Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan’s Bonds, it does have more in favorite with the common Jason Bourne series starring Matt Damon, which is not a awful thing.

This Bond pickes up legal after the demolish of Casino Royale, as Bond takes a prisoner for interrogation to M, again played by Dame Judy Dench. The interrogation and subsequent events uncovers a global conspiracy named Quantum, with members of prominence and power, including an admired environmentalist who is obviously up to no noble. The rest of the film plays out as Bond races to score out and foil the villain’s device, partnered with a revenge-minded woman, played by Olga Kurylenko.

The negatives – This film is powerful shorter than most Bond films, which isn’t well-behaved or dreadful by itself, but the film plays in parts like it had a bit too mighty carve out, most notably the scenes between Bond and Strawberry Fields, a female agent played by Gemma Arterton. Like many women, she tries to resist Bond’s charms to no avail, but as events unfold, it is positive that Fields and Bond had quite a bit of time together, which is not reflected in the final slit. He doesn’t need to be the kind of kitschy, cartoonish villain that the obsolete Bond films are renowned for, but he should at least raise the audiences hackles, but he does not. Finally, the tension between Bond and M is understandable, but every film shouldn’t have Bond being stripped of his license and having him act any more of a free agent than he already does. It would be more realistic to present the continued development of their relationship with disagreements and dialogue rather than rely on a spot blueprint that has been frail numerous times in the Bond series.

The positives, which far outweigh the negatives – Daniel Craig continues to demonstrate that his Bond is like no other. His Bond is nuanced, unnerved, and truly, truly uncertain. This Bond seems like someone who has a license to slay and is more expedient to exhaust it than any other Bond put Dalton’s Bond. His acting talent gives Bond the gravitas and excellent humor that provides a balanced character. The action scenes have been updated and are breathtaking, and the potential for future films seem limitedless.

Quantum of Solace bodes well for the future of the series since even though it is flawed, it is at the same time a very distinguished film.

Looking for the musical that beat WEST SIDE Record for the Tony Award? You’ve found it here, in Meredith Willson’s THE MUSIC MAN — and its appearance on DVD, in widescreen format and with all the bells and whistles, is long overdue.

Pop the disc in, and you’ll immediately be taken to the “Factual Here In River City” documentary (you’ll have to press the MENU button on your DVD controls to obtain to the main menu so you can actually understanding the movie — why the disc goes immediately to the documentary is rather curious) . Hosted by Shirley Jones, who collected looks vast, the expedient, too-short documentary is crammed with lots of friendly stories and bits of trivia, in the words of several of Those Who Were There. You’ll gather out, for instance, which segments were actually filmed first, how amazed Susan Luckey was at Robert Preston’s ability to lip-synch “Peril” during filming, and why Shirley Jones wore so many frills and flowers on her dress in the scene at the footbridge.

As for the film itself — the print is glorious, and as someone who had only experienced the film in pan-and-scan format, it is a delight to finally peek entire dance sequences without the cropping. There are other, smaller moments that have always cried our for the letterbox format, and if you view both versions closely, you’ll contemplate the steady advantages in seeing the entire scene as it was shot. For example, one particularly disorienting scene in pan-and-scan format is the “Hold A Tiny, Talk A Little/Goodnight, Ladies” sequence, when Professor Hill is speaking with Mrs. Shinn and the town ladies about Stale Miser Madison, and dismebodied voices drift in from off camera. At one point, Mrs. Shinn says, “Miser,” and an off-camera assert says, “Madison,” causing Mrs. Shinn to grimace. In pan-and-scan, it looks like a mistake; in widescreen format, the speaker is finally visible to Mrs. Shinn’s accurate, bringing the scene together in a logical fashion. Sounds like a trivial moment, I know, but that scene in pan-and-scan has grated me for years!

The DVD also contains a theatrical trailer, but it’s not the trailer for the new 1962 release, but for the re-release a number of years later. It’s unexcited an racy curiosity, featuring a reworked version of the “76 Trombones” sequence with Preston signing current lyrics about the film.

If there’s any shortcoming in the disc, it lies in the sound quality. You’ll have to crank the volume up a bit to hear everything properly, but beware — the moment you hit the MENU button, you’ll be blasted by and ear-splitting version of “76 Trombones” on the menu veil. Ouch. Hit Soundless moral before you touch MENU. You’ll thank me later.

It’s a obsolete out cliche, but they really DON’T acquire musicals like this any more. And if your only experience with THE MUSIC MAN has been with the pan-and-scan format, do yourself a favor and retract up either the DVD or the letterboxed VHS format. You really WILL realize what you’ve been missing.

I adore this movie. As humorous as it is — a goofy position, absurd over-the-top characters, the wacky “contemplate system” — it is fair a whole lot of fun. Robert Preston sparkles as the fly-by-night con artist/salesman who honest happens this time to pick up his foot caught in the door, and who better to accept that foot than Shirley Jones, who is as sparkling and talented a leading lady as has ever graced a grand cover musical. Ron Howard is as amusing as a kid can be in the movies, and the music will finish with you long after the movie is over.

The film also has a tremendous cast of supporting character actors and comedians, not to mention the fantastic Buffalo Bills. I treasure the anvil salesman character (THAT’S a big line of merchandise for a traveling salesman!), and my well-liked song has to be the pool hall song, “There’s concern in River City.” The movie, silly as it is, also has its touching moments, especially when Professor Harold Hill, standing on the footbridge, confronts the gap between his dreams and his life for the first time, and really realizes he is in savor with the glorious librarian. For pure fun and entertainment, it’s hard to accumulate a better movie than this spellbinding but affectionate kidding of the Hawkeye Situation, and hard to pick up a more fun couple than the moving Robert Preston and the pretty Shirley Jones.

Hubert Selby Jr.’s elegiac and mesmerizing unusual about four addicts of different varieties appeared in 1978 and ranked alongside Selby’s “Last Exit to Brooklyn” (also made into a splendid film) as one of his best books. Darren (”Pi”) Aronofsky was himself a Selby fan and eventually persuaded the Thousand Arts production company to finance his $5M film of the recent.

The resulting film is as horrific and curious as anything ever save on a shroud. The residence isn’t complicated: Junkie Harry (a nearly unrecognizeable Jared Leto) takes to pawning his mother’s TV spot for heroin. His buddy Tyrone (Marlon Wayans, in a performance that makes his turn in “Scary Movie” and other junk gape like total red herrings) hatches a concept with him to derive for a pound of pure and do them on the lickety-split track to riches. Harry’s girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) has vague plans of opening a boutique with her piece of the gains. And Harry’s mother (a truly unbelievable Ellen Burstyn) is obsessed with appearing on her current TV point to.

Movies like this are not about plotting but emotion. We know there is no overjoyed ending possible here; what matters is not what happens but how and to what extent. This isn’t a sparkling movie. This isn’t a movie for your mother (well, I guess that depends on the family), or a movie for the whole family. This is a movie about despair and destroyed dreams. In short, this is a movie about something — and it tells its myth with such fierce style and power that it almost makes issues of taste or subject matter irrelevant. You may not like the film — and there are many who don’t — but you can’t hiss its power, or the skill enthusiastic in making it.

I was tempted to title my summary “Drugs are unpleasant, mm’kay? ” because this movie was so dark I was desperate to inject a dinky humor. Man, what a dusky, scary, safe, grim, disturbing, well-made movie. The more I read about this movie and learned about it, the more titillating it seemed. I also am one of those people who, when they hear a movie is extremely terrifying and disturbing, gather a burning run to observe it as like a flash as I can to eye if it shocks me (especially if it’s unrated or NC-17), since I am comely jaded. So, I eagerly anticipated seeing it.

The spot concerns four addicts. Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly play a young loving couple, Harry and Marion, who dabble in heroin and thought to effect a sizable sale along with their friend Tyrone (Shawn Wayans) so they can be plot for life and Marion can originate up her maintain (suitable) business. Unfortunately, their recreational drug exercise turns into day-to-day addiction, and things open to come by gruesome. Sincere shocking. He looks like he’s getting a abominable feeling when she’s babbling happily about how she has a reason to gain up in the morning, and then he hears her grinding her teeth, and figures it out. This is the first time in the movie you notice actual dread in his eyes. Sarah soon starts having very scary strung-out hallucinations-starting out with subtle things like time woozily slowing down and speeding attend up, and when her refrigerator suddenly starts attractive on its contain, the right nightmare begins. An aggressive fridge with a mind of its gain sounds Monty Python-esque when you first hear about it, but trust me, you won’t be laughing by the extinguish of the movie.

One review I read said that the movie not only pulls the rug out from under you, it drags you and the rug down a long flight of stairs into a very dusky basement. Another reviewer compared the experience of watching the film to a drug, and that’s not too far off the ticket either. Whenever a character gets high, there’s a slam-bang expeditiously cleave montage of the same images over and over; a suppose, a pupil dilating, cells changing color. The scenes where Sarah hallucinates are fine cessation to the exact thing. The description I probably agree with most came from Darren Aronofsky himself-he compared the film to a jump from a plane without a parachute, and the movie ends three minutes after you hit the ground. The last few minutes that explain the unpleasant, depressing, worst-case-scenario fates of all 4 characters are unbiased as intense, hard to glance, and nightmarish as I heard they were.

My only complaints would be that I wish it were longer, with more time for character development. I would have liked more scenes of what these people and their lives were like before they were addicts, as well as their relationships with each other. The cast is great- Wayans shows that he has the most range and talent of the Wayans bros- I laughed so hard at him in Don’t Be A Menace that I ended up buying it, but here…wow. I would have liked to peek more of his character. I never liked Leto great before, but he is first-rate and also almost unrecognizable (he said he dropped 1/5 of his weight for the role and boy does it note) . Connelly I disliked so remarkable before that I would actively avoid seeing movies she was in, but I was very impressed and convinced that she can act. Burstyn gives the performance of a lifetime- not only convincing, but she was dedicated enough to let the filmmakers obtain her gape like absolute and total hell, which many actresses over 50 would probably not be heroic enough to do.

Not recommended if you’re easily alarmed, squeamish, or upset. If you only like movies that grasp you to a joyful station, end far away. Everyone who left the movie theater looked like they had impartial been hit over the head with a very stout board. And we were all people who knew what we were getting into. Recommended for those who want to witness a movie that will completely overtake you and involve you emotionally. In addition, this film should be required viewing for everyone in the fashion industry that supported and glorified that whole unsightly ‘heroin chic’ trend. Also a friendly movie if you are having some problems in your life and want to place them in perspective VERY swiftly. And even though I hold my weight down the outmoded arrangement, I’ll probably never gaze at my fridge quite the same diagram again…

This review covers both versions of “Flatland” released in 2007, one by Ladd Ehlinger, Jr. with a mostly unknown philosophize cast, and the other by Jeffrey Travis with some Hollywood grand names providing the voices.

The source material for both is the 1884 novella by Edwin A. Abbott, but the approaches of the two films differ radically. The book is a staple of science fiction, and one of the few to address mathematical issues at its core. Being a product of its time, the book is technically naive, and politically improper based on recent sensibilities.

The Travis film is visually slicker, but significantly shorter, and tackles philosophical issues relative to the passage of time from initial publication. As such, it tampers with the place to mixed conclude. Unlike some others, I have no quandary with some of the revisions to the underlying region since they do assist bring some of the book’s major issues into somewhat sharper focus. On the other hand, they also add a “feel suitable” and politically just sensibility that seems out of situation.

The Ehlinger film is considerable truer to its source material, which is both a strength and a weakness. Given a novel perspective, its 19th century depiction of the political and social subjugation of women is a distraction that the Travis film avoids. It’s also a longer film and could have been more effective with some of the same place and editing license employed in the Travis film. Where it does tamper with the position, some of the decisions are questionable as other reviewers have pointed out.

So which is better? In my idea, the short acknowledge is the Ehlinger film. Despite its length, political incorrectness, and technical inferiority (the animation of the Travis film is mighty more sophisticated), it resonates at a technical level to a degree that the Travis film can’t match. As a scientist, this means a lot to me. On the other hand, the Travis film resonates on an emotional level that the Ehlinger film can’t match. So the retort may be whether you’re looking for technical insight or emotional satisfaction.

Most jarring in the Travis film is that, unlike the Ehlinger film, the animators never quite caught on to the implications of a two-dimensional universe. It is filled with objects which are instantly recognizable to us, yet would be clearly impossible or meaningless in the film’s reality (e.g. the protagonist’s daughter has toys which only fabricate sense to someone with a 3-D perspective, and how does he begin his briefcase? ) . The veil art is an positive first impression example. The Travis film’s characters peek more human, but ask yourself how their eyes work. One detail of the book is that looking at a Flatlander from above, all of his internal organs are clearly visible, as they should be. Travis’ animators hint at this, but don’t meet it head-on. The Ehlinger film’s animators may not have had the resources to earn as slick a film as Travis’, but they obviously gave a tall deal of belief to what they were doing (or maybe not, since the principal designs were all in the book) . In short, Travis had the budget, but Ehlinger had the passion for the project – albeit perhaps a bit too mighty respect for the source to obtain a truly great adaptation.

The differences consider different target audiences, though. The Travis film is an educational short film which was obviously meant to be viewed by classrooms of middle school and high school students. As such, it had to be socially inoffensive while conveying concepts of geometry that would never occur to non-mathematicians. That it includes recognizable names voicing the characters will encourage it grab a bit more attention – an educational short film for the “X-Files” generation. The Ehlinger film would mostly appeal to people with a college level interest in mathematics, or others who are already familiar with the book.

Neither film is perfect, but I’m giving the Ehlinger film a rating of 4 and the Travis film a rating of 3. Depending on your sensibilities, your conclusion may be exactly opposite of mine, so I hope this review includes enough information to guide you to an informed selection.

As an elementary teacher, I was impressed at how the filmmakers deny this account in a device that it is visually arresting and engrossing for children, while at the same time conception provoking for adults.

This movie is a perfect example of how a film can be made beautifully effective without having to resort to raw sex, constant violence, or complicated plots. It is the simple but charming epic of two awful children, a brother and a sister, who must fragment one pair of shoes because the brother, during his streak home from the shoe repair loses his sister’s shoes.The loss of the shoes brings on all the difficulties with which they must now cope. The film tenderly shows how they strive toward resolution of their quandary. The dialogue is kept minimal, and yet the director has achieved a very solid tension that keeps your eyes glued to the hide from the opening frames till the very raze. This film beautifully shows a world of which most Westerners are completley unaware, a world that is so different from our occupy. The bulk of the film is carried very capably, on the shoulders of two microscopic, young children, and they do a totally magnificant job of making you fill this very comely, charming, and sterling film. This is the stuff for which Oscars are made.

This 1997 film is from Iran. And it’s the kind of film that the whole family can luxuriate in. It’s about a 9-year venerable boy who loses his 7-year outmoded sister’s shoes through no fault of his beget. They are very awful and they both want to maintain it a secret from their parents. And so they allotment his only pair of worn-out sneakers. She wears them to school in the morning, and then runs through the streets, gives him the shoes and he wears them in the afternoon. Such a idea is not without its challenges, however. She almost loses a shoe when it falls into a gutter. He’s tedious for school. The shoes are frail. Both of them crave a pair of their gain.

Amir Farrokh Hasherman is cast as the boy. He has the biggest, most expressive eyes I’ve ever seen and my heart immediately went out to him. Bahare Seddiqi is the shrimp sister. She wears a long dress and a white head covering unprejudiced like all the other dinky girls. It’s their shoes that indicate their individuality and she is always looking at all the other minute girl’s feet. One day she sees a slight girl wearing her maintain lost shoes, but the other tiny girl is the daughter of a blind beggar. Later, there is a footrace announced in the microscopic boy’s school. He finds out that if he wins third prize he can earn a unique pair of sneakers. The tension mounts.

One of the best things about this film is that it brought me into another culture. This is not about revolution and bombs and sadness. This is impartial a simple memoir about the like between a brother and sister. It transcends all cultures, and makes the audience search for the humanity of the children. There’s one scene where they super the shoes and blow big astronomical soap bubbles at each other. It certainly is heartwarming. I honest wanted to give these children a ample sizable hug.

This is one of my approved movies. It’s quality is typical of what I have near to seek information from of a Criterion reconstruction. Something along the lines of HDTV dismal and white. I don’t even know if it has an English language soundtrack, as the tonality of the Russian soundtrack combined with the very well produced English subtitles offers a grand connection to the film even for non Russian speaking people. Win this disk, you wil bask in it over and over.

I’m gay to watch “Letyat zhuravlii” available in video, and with subtitles. This is a classic Soviet film, site during the Patriotic War. It begins with the cranes flying over Moscow, and for Veronika and Boris, the stolen evening hours are idyllic. Suddenly their plans are shattered by War. When Boris goes to the front, his fiancee cherishes his farewell gift and vows to await his return. Meanwhile, Boris’ cousin, Ticket, who has bribed his scheme to a deferment, schemes to net her heart. War reaches Moscow, and Veronika’s parents perish in an air raid. She takes refuge with her fiance’s family, loyally resisting the treacherous advances of Notice. Anxiously she awaits letters from the front, which never approach. At last, under a barrage of bombing, Veronika is overwhelmed by inconvenience and scare, and succumbs to the cousin’s wiles. At the same time, on the frontlines, alone, Boris succumbs to his wounds. Veronika, unaware of Boris’ death, weds Ticket but remains troubled by guilt. She flees her arrogant, abusive husband to wait on as a nurse in a military hospital. When War ends, she has convinced herself that Boris will return with the cranes to Moscow. “Cranes are Flying” is a simple, tragic sage, filmed artistically for its time, but without cinematic subtlety. The geometric V-formation of the flying cranes, for instance, is repeated throughout the entire film. The repetative imagery of marching feet, hurrying toward eachother but never meeting, symbolizes the futility of the protagonists’ appreciate. The scene of Boris’ death is melodramatically drawn out, his final dying thoughts only of his beloved. I’m not certain of the filmmaker’s intent here, but honestly, I feel only relief that the likable Boris is spared the wound of Veronika’s betrayal. Despite some cliche’ and distraction, “Cranes are Flying” is a worthwhile film. The final scene is powerful; the viewer will not be left dry-eyed. Recommended for anyone who cares about the human tragedy of war.

You know, I have to agree with Mr. Erdelac – the movie is progressive for its time. For those of you who contemplate a movie by the degree to which it beats a political or social drum, there is great here to like.

But there is more. There is something artistic. There is an queer balance between melodrama and something really expansive, something actually genuine to the viewer. I believe a mammoth share of why this movie doesn’t drop into the sludge of cinematic slop is because the characters are all flawed, and in those flaws the viewer cannot succor but watch a touch of human frailty. Every individual in this movie is at times ridiculous and at other times supremely dignified. This, I hold, gives it a obvious depth.

The characters in any gigantic movie MUST be larger than life if the fraction is to avoid being either a documentary or a soap opera. But here the larger than life characters seem firmly rooted in the earth, which brings them closer to us. I like that.

Overall, I believe the sensitive viewer will gather in this movie grand that is both emotionally and philosophically stimulating, if he/she is willing to view past the inevitable veneer of 74 years. I personally believe it a particularly consuming and thought-provoking cinematic experience.

What are some of these reviewers thinking? I unbiased watched this movie for the first time, and considering the period, this has got to be one of the most progressive films ever to advance out of the 1930’s. Yes, like most, I inwardly cringed at the search for of `Isaiah’ whistling and intelligent shoes during the opening credits, but I really felt that the character hurt up being noteworthy more than a stereotypical clown (this is NOT Gone With The Wind) . Deem the societal constraints under which the creators of this film worked, and I should believe its definite that they did what they could, perhaps subversively. Abet then they honest couldn’t have a dark character or a elephantine blooded Indian character who spoke for and defended himself, but they could net a scheme to espouse more liberal views through the character of Cravat. In the ruin, by draw of his actions, Isaiah certainly becomes a more mettlesome character than Mammy or Uncle Remus. Likewise, the treatment of womens’ roles and Indian rights are amazingly far ahead of their time -even going so far as to touch on interracial marriage and the potential of women to be stronger and even more efficient than men -which at a time when the suffragists were collected alive, has got to be commended. Is it incomprehensible to judge that such giant characters, dandily dressed and sporting pistols and purple words ever walked the land before 1930? All this talk of dating (at the risk of sounding dated) is a lot of hooey. When you eye a movie like this you’ve got to establish yourself in the mindset of the audience of the period, or of course you’re always going to mediate its `aged badly.’

The film is shot well. The Land Speed is tremendous, as is that scene where Dunne runs through the spattered men of the oil field at the ruin (it reminded me of Claudia Cardinale walking through the slew of rail workers at the slay of Once Upon A Time In The West) . There are shots during the emigration of the Cravats from Kansaas which also discontinue in the mind. The lantern hanging from the rear axle of the wagon, only illuminating the turning wheels on either side, while Cravat lowly sings his signature tune was a stroke of genius, and the Kid and his gang riding out of the black and empty land into their campsite is well done. The sound on the VHS is a cramped abominable, with a lot of background boom occassionally overwhelming the dialogue. I hope if this ever gets to DVD they can fix this.

I’ve been waiting patiently forever for this movie to finally arrive out on DVD. Nicholas Cage, John Lovitz and Dana Carvey gain this movie utterly hilarious throughout. Cage plays the typical normal, logical, calculating brother of the 3. John Lovitz is the brother you can never trust and Carvey is a goofy, klepto-maniac who hardly uses any well-liked sense. When these 3 advance together in a scene it’s hard to imagine something droll “not” happening. 3 Diverse and conflicting personalities produce for a huge comedy farse!

Way abet in 1990 something when this movie came out, it was screened as a student feature at the college I was attending at the time prior to it’s release in theathers. I went with a respectable friend of mine, and we seemed to be the only people in the theater laughing. After the movie hit theaters, all of the reviews were negative as if the movie featured a cast of unknowns instead of three very well established entertainers, two of whom are very gifted comedians. While all three actors have had better roles, they work well together with Cage being the straight man to Lovitz and Carvey’s comedic banter. Yes, I realize that the premise of this movie is somewhat far fetched, but that’s why it’s a movie and not a news epic. The movie has its sparkling fragment of laughs with a healthy dose of Christmas spirit. It gets watched every holiday season at my house, and I recommend it to anyone who is obedient of watching a movie and being OK with the fact that it is a work of FICTION! Anyway, appreciate the movie, the calesthenics schtick by Lovitz during the bank robbery alone is worth the label of admission.
